Chambard
Horse age: 12 Trainer: Venetia Williams Jockey: Lucy Turner Horse star sign: Taurus Horse trained at: England - Midlands Jockey silks colour: Blue
Chambard has been a superb campaigner for the Venetia Williams stable winning six races for the yard since moving from France in 2017. T hose six wins include a 40/1 victory at the Cheltenham Festival in the Kim Muir and a win in the Becher Chase at Aintree in December. That last victory came this season in gruelling conditions where the twelve-year-old gelding ground out a thirteen-length victory over Coko Beach on very heavy ground. That victory came from a mark of 140 and Chambard will line up in the National with a rating of 146 so, in theory, it’s not impossible he could be a contender at Aintree in April. The Becher Chase victory though was undoubtedly down to the fact that Chambard dealt with conditions that day better than his rivals where only five of the twelve starters completed the course. Chambard’s regular pilot, Lucy Turner, claimed five pounds that day but she is not eligible to claim in the Grand National which would effectively mean Chambard would be eleven pounds worse off than his win here in December. Chambard is twelve-years-old now so it's difficult to see him being able to find the necessary improvement to be involved in the finish of an ultra-competitive race such as the Grand National.
