Campaigned well by canny trainer Sandy Thomson and ridden by former Grand National winning jockey, Ryan Mania, Empire Steel is a Kelso specialist who has won four of his five races over fences at the Scottish track. A winner over 2m 7f in 2021, Empire Steel has now had twelve tries at distances of three miles and further but has still to record a victory. The son of Aizavoski ran well in last year’s Scottish National over four miles when finishing a tired eighth to Kitty’s Light. The suspicion that day was that such extended trips stretch his stamina but he did have a wind operation before his latest run where he was an impressive winner over 2m 5f. It will be interesting to see how Empire Steel would get on in a stamina test now if his wind is no longer causing him problems. Empire Steel will need a few horses to be withdrawn to make it into the race (currently number 40) but he would be an interesting outsider if he were to make it into the race .
