Grand National Clues From the Scottish National The Scottish National is run at Ayr in April over 4 miles. This race is often run on good ground but still provides a very strong test of stamina.
The Scottish National has been won by some great horses over the years and Little Polveir, Earth Summit and the great Red Rum have managed to record victories at Ayr and Aintree
Recent Grand National Runners who ran in the Scottish National
The following horses ran in the Scottish National in a PREVIOUS season and then went on to win the Grand National.
2008 Grand National winner Comply Or Die finished PU at Ayr in 2005
1998 Grand National winner Earth Summit finished 1st at Ayr in 1994
1989 Grand National winner Little Polveir finished Pulled Up at Ayr in 1988 and had finished 1st at Ayr in 1987
2009 Grand National Tips from the Scottish National Horses that have been contested in the Scottish National are always worth paying close attention to if they are targeted at Aintree due to the similar distances of the race but just as importantly it often suggests that connections have no fears about their horse tackling extreme stamina tests on good ground as the ground at Ayr rarely comes up soft. This can be a major plus point as the ground at Aintree is almost always on the good side of soft.
A recent winner of the Scottish National is Hot Weld from the yard of Ferdy Murphy. This horse has proved his stamina on a number of occasions and needs good ground to show his best form. He would be a very interesting contender if making it to Aintree for 2009
