Previous Grand National Winners
In the last 20 years there have been five Grand National winners who had run in the previous years national.
2007 Slver Birch - unseater rider in 2006
2005 Hedgehunter - fell in 2004
2004 Amberleigh House - 3rd in 2003
2001 Red Maruader - fell in 2000
1989 Little Polveir - unseated rider 1988
Not a huge trend considering that a number of horses run in Grand Nationals two or more seasons running. But there have also been 13 placed horses who ran in the National in the previous year.
So out of 20 Grand Nationals there have been 18 runners win or place who had run in the previous Grand National.
Only six of those had been placed the previous season and five more had completed. But dont worry if your Grand National horse failed to complete last year as seven have done so in the last 20 years and either placed or won the following year.
Four of the five winners (above) failed to complete the national the year before they won.
