Last Years Grand National Form

Here we look at last years Grand National result and form to see if we can gain any clues to finding this years grand national winner.

Often horses return after runs in the grand national to place or win, we will look at the stats to help us to identify common trends from past grand national runners which could help us to identify future grand national winners.

Note Good Runs From Horses Who Have Failed To Complete

If a horse runs in the national but fails to finish then the handicapper tends not to take the run into consideration as much as had the horse completed.

So watch out for previous grand national runners who have put up good performances but not completed the course. Especially if they were unfortunate, or fell when running well, or pulled up on unsuitable ground. If there is reason to believe they can complete this time round, they could represent a good value bet.

Red Marauder Fell, Hedgehunter Fell and Silver Birch all fell in previous grand nationals before winning the race. So consider one of these runners who failed to complete last years grand national.

Grand National Winners Running Again In The National

We have all heard the stat over and over again.. " no grand national winner has defended their crown since Red Rum..".

Next time someone bores you with that stat, mention that Reynoldstown and Poethlyn are the other two multiple grand national winners since 1900.

It's not surprising there hasnt been more, becuase the handicapper penalises past winners with the aim of stopping them winning the race again. However, many have run extremely well to come close. So dont rule out an each way bet on past grand national winners in this years race.

Past Grand National Winners Running This Year

Do not be put off backing these runners each way. Comply Or Die and Hedgehunter both showed that winners can come back and go close the next year as the both finished runner up after winning. Mon Mome seems to have improved since last years race and could still be well handicapped so dont let the stat put you off beting him.

Last Years Grand National Runners, Can they Win This Year?

Just like previous grand national winners get penalised in the handicap ratings, it appears that previous grand national runners who complete the course do as well.

Very rarely have runners completed the grand national and come back to win. Mon Mome being a recent exception!

There have been plenty of placed horses who have managed to run good races again but the handicaper notes good previous runs in the national and sets the weights accordingly. So there needs to be a good reason for a huge improvement in a horse if you are to have conifidence betting a horse who has completed the grand national course before to go on to win the race in a subsequent year. Amberleigh House is an exception to this rule having finished third in a previous race before winning!
