Rambling Minster Odds and Grand National Form
Rambling Minster became the buzz horse of the 2009 Grand National after his victory in the Blue Square Gold Cup at Haydock where he surprised many observers with his versatility to go on ground that may not have suited him 100% but he had reserves in place that day to see off a quality field.
That victory at Haydock had come on the back of a battling victory with a big weight in a competitive handicap at Cheltenham and it appeared that Rambling Minster was hitting a rich vein of form in his eleventh year.
Consequently he was sent off just behind the favourite at a very skinny 8/1 for the National but never looked happy and was pulled up with quite a long way still to go in the race. It may just have been that his exertions on heavy ground at Haydock had taken a bigger toll than his connections thought, although he had been given nearly two months to recover. It may also be that white hot racing environments such as the Cheltenham Festival, the Scottish National or the Grand National itself are just a step too far up the ladder for Rambling Minster as every time he has moved into these most competitive of environments he has been found wanting.
Keith Reveleys gelding starts the 09/10 season 6lb higher than when pulling up at Aintree and would be twelve years old should he try his hand at Aintree again. It remains to be seen if he would be anymore effective if tried again but he may well need some assistance from the handicapper to have a major chance.
