Madison Du Berlais Odds and Grand National Form
Had never won over further than 2.5 Miles prior to his win in the Hennessy in November 2008 but he stayed on stoutly to see off Air Force One at Newbury that day and appears to have proved conclusively he stays three miles+. Reinforced this improved form by a stunning display in that year's hastily rearranged Aon Chase (Ran as the Levy Board Chase) at Kempton where he destroyed a top quality field including the winner of a Gold Cup, three Sun Alliance Chases and two other Hennessy Gold Cups! The handicapper obviously reacted very negatively to such a performance and raised David Pipe's chaser ten pounds and the horse then went into last year's Gold Cup as a quietly fancied 10/1 shot. Unfortunately he seemed not to enjoy Cheltenham but bounced right back to form with a win at the Aintree Festival where he looked to have the better of Denman when that horse fell two out.
Madison Du Berlais finished a distant runner-up to Kauto Star in the 2009 King George but other recent performances have not been inspiring and it's hard to be enthusiastic about his chances in a Grand National racing off top-weight.
