Alfa Beat has a similar profile to 2003 Grand National winner Monty's Pass in that both horses had won the Kerry National and both tried the Topham Chase over the National fences before focusing on the Grand National itself. Alfa Beat could still have a bit in hand of the handicapper and looks set to be raced over hurdles until the Grand National itself. The last three Grand National winners have all run over hurdles in their winning season so this looks a canny move by this horse’s new trainer, Shark Hanlon.

As well as 2009 winner Mon mome, the others were Tipperary Tim (1928), Gregalach (1929), Caughoo (1947), Foinavon (1967). It can be argued that Mon Mome was the only one who won without relying on a major incident taking out a lot of the field.
