Grand National Stats Picks
Our
Grand National trends page uses stats and trends to narrow down the grand national field.
These are the main picks for this years race. They meet the key stats and look well handicapped.
Alfa Beat has a similar profile to 2003 Grand National winner Monty's Pass in that both horses had won the Kerry National and both tried the Topham Chase over the National fences before focusing on the Grand National itself.
Alfa Beat could still have a bit in hand of the handicapper and looks set to be raced over hurdles until the Grand National itself. The last three Grand National winners have all run over hurdles in their winning season so this looks a canny move by this horse’s new trainer, Shark Hanlon.

Merigo has bags of stamina and meets all the key trends you look for in a grand national winner. He was unlucky not to make the National in 2011 but should be higher in the handicap in 2012 to ensure a top 40 spot.
Sorry. Merigo is not running in the 2012 Grand National

Always Right has graduated from point to points and hunter chasing in the style of Grand National legends Grittar and Spartan Missile. A great run in the 2011 Scottish National highlighted him as a horse to follow and he can challenge for Aintree honours.

>Only two greys have won the national
>Only six horses have carried more than eleven stone to victory since 1970 – Red Rum (twice, 1974, 1977) L’Escargot (1975), Grittar (1982), Corbiere (1983), Hedgehunter (2005) and Don’t Push It (2010)
>The last mare to win was Nickel Coin in 1951
>Four Lady jockeys have completed the course. The first was Geraldine Rees in 1982 aboard Cheers. More recently Carrie Ford was fifth on Forest Gunner(2005) and Nina Carberry who has been 9th in 2006, 7th in 2010 and 15th in 2011. Rosemary Henderson was 5th on Fiddlers Pike(1994)
>Irish trained horses have won 6 times since 1998 but have not had a winner since Silver Birch in 2007
>There have been 6 winners who have started at odds under 10/1 since 1978
>Since 1970 the winner has been 16/1 or under on 29 occasions
>There have been seven winning favourites since 1970.
>There have been five winners at 100/1 and that is the biggest odds of a winner in the history of the race. As well as 2009 winner Mon mome, the others were Tipperary Tim (1928), Gregalach (1929), Caughoo (1947), Foinavon (1967). It can be argued that
Mon Mome was the only one who won without relying on a major incident taking out a lot of the field.
