We all remember the 100/1 winner
Mon Mome that got away in last years Grand National dont we. One of the most impressive trails for this years renewal was the Gold Cup at Cheltenham only a week ago.
Mon Mome was a fast finishing third in the race and to me that was one hell of a performance. There will have been plenty to work on and you can bet your bottom dollar he will be spot on for the big day. His current odds of 10/1 are fairly short but he is going there in great spirits.
The favourite, and rightly so, is the Paul Nicholls trained Big Fella Thanks. He put in an outstanding round of jumping on his latest appearance at Newbury. He had Barry Geraghty in the plate that day but Ruby Walsh is favourite to take the ride for the National. Walsh must have been licking his lips when he saw
Big Fella Thanks cruise by his mount in Newbury that day. I would be amazed if this horse is out of the money and he goes there with the ideal preparation. There is no better man than Walsh to have his charge in the right place at the right time and he goes there with all guns blazing.
Of the Irish challenge there are a couple of horses who stand out to me as having our best chance.
Vic Venturi is the one that sticks out for me. He produced a very polished display last time out at Fairyhouse when he had his stable mate Black Appalachi behind him that day. That same horse will be up against him at Aintree but I still favour the son of Old Vic. Dessie Hughes is one of the shrewdest trainers in the business and he will be full of hope. If you look back to Aintree last year
Vic Venturi bolted up in the Beecher Chase over 3miles 2 furlongs.
Some might say that was over a shorter trip and the extra mile and a quarter could tell the story come Grand National, but for me its all about getting into a rhythm and
Vic Venturi is brilliant at that. At odds of 16/1 he gets my each way vote in the race.
The other Irish contender I like the look of is Ballyholland. He was a comprehensive winner of last years Galway Plate and has since bolstered his reputation with a couple of eye catching performances over hurdles. I know the trip will not pose a problem and he has the jumping ability to get round in one piece. His odds have gone from 50/1 down to 20/1 and a few clever lads are on at the bigger prices. He is trained by Colin McBratney and it would be a story of fairytales if he could pull it off.
