2009 Grand National Preview from Boylesports
Thanks to Leon Blanche, Head of Public Relations,

We are only days away from the most famous race in the world, the Grand National. A P McCoy has already re-written the history books this year in riding over 3000 winners and he will be looking to do it again on board the Jonjo O'Neill trained Butlers Cabin.
McCoy partnered the horse to land the Irish Grand National in April 2007 and picked him in the 2008 Aintree showpiece, and has been backed from a high of 25/1 into 10/1 joint Favorite with
Boylesports.
Vying for the top spot in the Ante Post books is the Paul Nicholls trained My Will.
My Will ran a very creditable race in the Gold Cup where he finished in fifth place. That race will have left him spot on and off the current weights he is 8lb better off. Although Nicholls has a poor record in the race you would be foolish to write of this fellow's chance and at 10/1 he has also been backed down from a high of 25/1.
A big eye catcher for me is Big Fella Thanks. He is jointly owned by Harry Findlay and Paul Barber who of course own Denman. In the Racing Post Chase he was staying on at the finish in a trip that was way too short for his liking. The plan had been to run him in the 4 miler at the Cheltenham Festival but that race was scrapped in favor of him being spot on in Liverpool in the start of April. There was a huge gamble prior to his run at Kempton, and although that has quite in recent weeks, at 16/1 for me that represents great each way value.

The weights for the 162nd running of the Grand National were announced at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel London on Tuesday February 10th and below are my thoughts on many of the leading contenders.
Big Fella Thanks was the name of the greyhound who won the 1999 Irish National Coursing Derby trained in Skibereen by Denis O'Driscoll for Harry Findlay. It would be some achievement if fearless punter Findlay who has had many highs and lows in the interim period were to win the greatest horserace in the world ten years on with a horse bearing the same name as his special greyhound.
Novices don't have a great record in the Grand National and many considered the defection of Gold Cup winner Denman spelt the end of Findlay's chances of winning the race for another year, but
Big Fella Thanks entered the National picture with his facile win in the
SkyBet Chase at Doncaster last month and he was backed for the Racing Post Chase as if defeat was out of the question.
Big Fella Thanks had looked a dour stayer prior to his Doncaster success where he travelled extremely well and could be called the winner some way out although I'm not convinced it was the greatest of renewals given there were no fewer than nine non runners due to the extremely testing conditions.
At this stage I am more interested in his stablemate
My Will and connections were thrilled with his Hennessy effort when a never-nearer fifth returning from a lengthy lay off. The nine-year-old has not been seen since and connections were surprised and delighted in equal measure that BHB handicapper Phil Smith dropped him 2lbs after the Newbury race. He has subsequently been laid out for the race and although some statisticians will tell you French breds don't stay the marathon Aintree trip he has won over three-and-a-half miles and if the weights weren't to rise he would be a must for the short-list.
Former Hennessy winner
State Of Play is anything but a certain starter given the owners are not big fans of the race and Evan Williams will need to be at his most persuasive if last year's Charlie Hall winner is to make the line up. The horse goes very well fresh and he would make limited appeal if he went to Cheltenham en route to Aintree but he is a fascinating contender and one that would warrant support if connections make the National the target.
At this stage last year I recommended
Comply Or Die and
Cloudy Lane as our antepost selections and of the two I very much prefer the chances of the former this year. The blinkers have been left off the horse so far this term but you can be sure that the aids will be back on in April although his supporters will be concerned that a poor blood count prevented last year's brilliant National winner from taking his chance in the
Blue Square Gold Cup at Haydock Park last month.
Willie Mullins was less than amused with the weight given to last year's third
Snowy Morning suggesting that handicapper Phil Smith hadn't taken this year's form into account when allotting him 11stone. It must be remembered that he would have finished even closer to
Comply Or Die had he not missed out the final fence last year but my gut feeling is that he has had his chance and is likely to find at least a couple too well-treated this year.
Mullins, however, was much more optimistic about the chances of Irish Invader (10st 1bs) who he felt was ideal for the race, would love the track and get the trip. He is not guaranteed to get into the race but even if that is the case I suggest we keep on the right side of the progressive eight-year-old between now and the end of the season.
Butler's Cabin showed a welcome return to form over timber last term but, like Clan Royal, I just wonder if his chance for Aintree glory went when he came down at Bechers last year.
He felt the Sandown race won but Can't Buy Time wasn't the strongest of races and he only had 9st 7lbs but there is no question that he'd like to get him in the race. The question of who AP McCoy will run was raised but Jonjo suggested it wouldn't necessarily be one of his with L'Ami given a favourable mention.
Charlie Egerton has Darkness and Hobbs Hill entered. The former ran well first time out but gurgled last time and has had a wind operation. Hobbs Hill will be next seen at Newbury on the 28th February.
Donald McCain felt
Cloudy Lane had too much weight and didn't think Idle Talk would get in the race.
Venetia Williams said Stan couldn't possibly win;
Mon Mome ran well at Chepstow but would run at Haydock before any decision was made on the National.
Evan Williams agreed
State Of Play looked attractively weighted but the owners didn't want to run in the race.
Jim Goldie said Endless Power will run but won't stay the trip.
Gordon Elliot was very pleased with the weight given to
Silver Birch (10st 3lbs) and despite his years this is one to keep on the right side of.
Philip Hobbs suggested Monkerhostin didn't take to the place and is highly unlikely to run but was very optimistic about the chances of Parson's Legacy who must have good ground to be seen at his best.
Nigel Twiston-Davies felt Knowhere, Battlecry and
Ballyfitz (before Ascot) were likely to run but wasn't sure about the plans for Imperial Commander. He thought Knowhere was extremely well-treated on his best form.
Tom Mullins was also disappointed with the weight given to Chelsea Harbour and couldn't work out why he was 8lbs higher in Britain.
Connections of
King Johns Castle were more than happy with weight given to last year's runner up although Phil Smith felt that he
Snowy Morning and
Comply Or Die were weighted to dead-heat (he took into account a mistake by Mullins' horse at the last!).
Conclusion: Positives for Comply Or Die, Big Fella Thanks, My Will, Irish Invader, State Of Play, Butler's Cabin, Silver Birch, Parson's Legacy.
Negatives: Star De Mohaison, Snowy Morning, Air Force One, Cloudy Lane, Stan, Endless Power, Monkerhostin, Chelsea Harbour
