The Midnight Club Odds and Grand National Form
Sixth in the 2011 Grand National beaten over twenty-five lengths by the winner Ballabriggs but the bare facts don't really tell the whole story of The Midnight Club's performance.
Sent off favourite due to his eyecatching recent form and the Mullins/Walsh winning combination, The Midnight Club's supporters must have thought they were on a loser as early as the third fence when the horse made a horrendous mistake and Walsh performed miracles to stay in the saddle. After that it was just a matter of trying to get the horse balanced again and it must be said that ridden by a lesser jockey this horse would not have got back into contention in the race. Ruby Walsh managed to get the horse to regain its composure and even managed to get into a near challenging position before being badly hampered four out.
It's hard to know if the horse would react positively or negatively to this first expereince of Aintree and whilst he would be eleven years old in 2012 he is very lightly raced for a horse of his age. It would be hard for me to forgive the mistake he made at the third fence and I would be inclined to think his performance would detiorate next time rather than improve. It will be interesting to see if Walsh is back in the plate in 2012 but I very much doubt he will be.
Willie Mullins' son of Flemensfirth has been placed at two Cheltenham Festivals, has won and placed at the Punchestown Festival and has been placed in the 50k Thyestes Chase so his ability is not in question but it may just be that he is more likely to win another big race in Ireland than at Aintree.
