Minella Rocco Odds and Grand National Form 2018

Owner JP McManus paid £260,000 for Minella Rocco in 2014 so big things have obviously been expected of this horse and his first two runs for his new connections resulted in two very easy wins over hurdles. Trainer Jonjo O’Neill said at that point that the horse was a chaser in the making so there must have been concerns when the horse then failed to win on his first four races over fences. In fact Minella Rocco didn’t break his duck over fences till he won at the Cheltenham Festival. The win at Cheltenham was in the four mile National Hunt Chase where the big step up in distance obviously played to the young horse’s strengths. The form of that race has been underlined in spades with the runner-up (Native River) going on to take the Hennessy Gold Cup and the 5th horse, Vicente, taking the Scottish National on his next outing. Minella Rocco reappeared this season in a long distance chase at Cheltenham and caught they eye when staying on in third place behind Viconte Du Noyer. Back to back incompletions followed that promising start to the season with a fall at the last at Aintree and then an unseated rider at Leopardstown in the Irish Gold Cup. Jockey of the moment Noel Fehily was brought in to ride the horse in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the horse appeared to gel well with Fehily who managed to safely get the horse round and even stayed on well to snatch second place behind Sizing John. On his Gold Cup form Minella Rocco looks to have a great chance in the Grand National as he will undoubtedly now be ahead of the handicap. However it must be a major worry that he has failed to complete in two of this last three races. Another slight concern must also be his tendency to race quite lazily to the point he has needed early reminders in some of his races this season. It would be doubtful he would be able to get way with that sort of quirky behaviour in a race like the National. Also, as mentioned with other horses of his age, he will only be seven in April and horses of that age have a terrible record in the Grand National.
