Butlers Cabin Odds and Grand National Form
AP McCoys mount was sent off favourite for the 2009 National but could manage only seventh place behind Mon Mome, beaten twenty-four lengths and in doing so continued the disappointing run of the selected mounts of the Champion Jockey.
In hindsight Butlers Cabin faced a difficult task as the handicapper had assessed him on his Grand National form and given him a rating of 147 whereas his rating outside of the Grand National had fallen to 135 and he was still failing to make the frame.
Butlers Cabin had ran off 147 in the 2008 Grand National and appeared to be going ominously well behind the leaders when falling at Bechers on the second circuit. The official handicapper was obviously convinced that Jonjo ONeils nine year old was going to be involved in the finish that day and acted accordingly when allocating his weight for 2009.
He remains a hard horse to weigh up as he is/was very talented, as seen when winning the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham and Irish National at Fairyhouse in 2007 in the space of three weeks. However, since those victories positive form has been hard to find and he has thrown in some reluctant displays. If the handicapper now relents with his view of his Grand National rating and the horse finds some of his old form then he may well be a force in the 2010 Grand National but it may well be that AP McCoy is aboard something else come the day of the race.
