Run Wild Fred’s standout runs so far in his career have come when he has faced decent ground conditions, most notably when runner-up in both an Irish National and a National Hunt Chase and when winning the Troytown Chase three years ago. Unfortunately, Run Wild Fred hasn’t won since that Troytown victory and in the last two seasons his good performances have been very much overshadowed by his bad ones. The Gordon Elliott trained gelding was strongly fancied for the Grand National two seasons ago (8/1 second favourite) but he fell at the Canal Turn on the first circuit. The ten-year-old gelding has failed to complete the course on his last three outings this season and is officially rated six pounds lower now than when his handicap mark for the Grand National was allocated. With the ground likely to be against him, his lack of recent form and being badly handicapped compared to his current rating, it’s very difficult to see Run Wild Fred being involved in the finish of the Grand National this year.
