Welsh National Form
The Welsh National is run at Chepstow in December over 3m5.5F. This race is often run in very soft ground and provides a very strong test of stamina.
The Welsh National is one of the great races of the National Hunt calendar, throwing up winners of the Grand National and Cheltenham Gold Cup such as Rag Trade, Corbiere, Burrough Hill Lad, Cool Ground and Master Oats.
Recent Grand National Runners who ran in the Welsh National
Since 1988, five Grand National winners have run in the Welsh National in the same season:
2009 Grand National winner Mon Mome finished 8th at Chepstow
2002 Grand National winner Bindaree finished 3rd at Chepstow
1998 Grand National winner Earth Summit WON at Chepstow
1992 Grand National winner Party Politics finished 2nd at Chepstow
1988 Grand National winner Rhyme N Reason finished 2nd at Chepstow
In addition to the above it is also worth looking at horses that have run in the Welsh National in previous seasons as the race is such a good indication of the confidence of the connections that the horse in question has the required stamina to win a National. The following horses ran in the Welsh National in a
PREVIOUS season and then went on to win the Grand National.
2008 Grand National winner Comply Or Die finished PU at Chepstow in 2005
2007 Grand National winner Silver Birch Won at Chepstow in 2004
2005 Grand National winner Hedgehunter finished 3rd at Chepstow in 2003
1994 Grand National winner Miinnehoma finished 3rd at Chepstow in 1992
1989 Grand National winner Little Polveir finished 8th at Chepstow in 1987
2010 Grand National Tips from the Welsh National
The victory at Aintree of
Mon Mome has given further creedance to widely held view that the Welsh National provides one of the best form guides for the Grand national.
Mon Mome had been favourite for the Welsh National in 2008 on the strength of his excellent victory in a handicap chase at Cheltenham two weeks before. Connections may have been slightly disappointed with his performance at Chepstow but he may prefer better ground at this stage of his career than the very soft conditions he encountered and he finally finished eighth behind Notre Pere.
The year before in this race
Mon Mome had finished an honourable runner-up to Halcon Genelardais and that is just one of a number of excellent runs from the horse that seemed to have been forgotten by us all on Grand National day and allowed him to start at that amazing price of 100/1.
In 2009 a number of Aintree National hopes again lined up at Aintree but it was Philip Hobbs' nine-year-old
Dream Alliance that was victorious in a hard-fought half-length victory over Silver By Nature from the stable of Lucinda Russell.
With now FIVE horses having won at Aintree after competing at Chepstow in the same season, horses who perform well in the Welsh National will be very interesting betting prospects. Make note for the
grand national 2010.
Dream Alliance has disappointed since his Welsh National run but with six weeks to recover before the Grand National he could bounce back to form

Don't forget horses that have previously run in the Welsh National as the Chepstow race continues to provide Aintree clues. Last year's Aintree hero
Mon Mome must be considered again even though he will be certain to carry more weight.

Another horse to consider if the ground were to come up soft would be 2008 Welsh National winner Notre Pere. He will have a big weight but if the ground was testing he would relish a stamina test.
