Hennessy Gold Cup Form
The Hennessy Gold Cup is run at Newbury in November over 3m2.5F. This is a top quality handicap chase and together with the
Paddy Power, provides the early season highlights for National Hunt fans.
The Hennessy Gold Cup has a rich tradition as it has been won by jumping legends such as Arkle and Mill House. More recently other horses who have gone on to win the
Cheltenham Gold Cup such as Bregawn, Burrough Hill Lad and most recently, Denman have won the Hennessy on route to
Cheltenham.
Recent Grand National Runners who ran in The Hennessy Gold Cup
Since 1988, seven Grand National winners have run in The Hennessy Gold Cup in the same season:
2002 Grand National winner Bindaree finished 5th at Newbury
2001 Grand National winner Red Marauder finished 5th at Newbury
1998 Grand National winner Earth Summit finished 5th at Newbury
1996 Grand National winner Rough Quest finished 2nd at Newbury
1992 Grand National winner Party Politics finished 2nd at Newbury
1991 Grand National winner Seagram finished 9th at Newbury
1990 Grand National winner Mr Frisk finished 3rd at Newbury
So,a third of the last twenty winners of the Grand National had run in The Hennessy Gold Cup in the season before winning at Aintree.
Also, during that period six of the Grand National winners were trained in Ireland and The Hennessy tends to be not targeted as much as some of the other British handicaps by the top Irish trainers.
If we take out the Irish winners, seven of the last fifteen British winners of the Grand National have used the Hennessy as one of their prep races. A definite statistic to remember when studying the runners at Newbury in November!

Paul Nicholl's charge ran an excellent race at Newbury after and extended lay-off to finish an eyecatching fifth behind
Madison Du Berlais in 2008 and went back to Newbury for his season opener again this year. After making some mistakes
My Will ran a respectable race to finish seventh and connections must be very pleased with his debut in a year which looks as if it will be geared specifically to Aintree

The most eye-catching performance from the all the possible Aintree runners that appeared at Newbury undoubtedly came from
Niche Market. He ran a superb race to finish just over seven lengths behind the mighty Denman in third place and this run immediately alerted the ante-post punters who snapped up some tasy prices for the National.
Bob Buckler's charge already has the Irish National under his belt and now with a great run in the Hennessy he would seem to have the strongest claims of the leading challengers for Aintree glory.
