West End Rocker Odds and Grand National Form 2013
Alan King is not noted for his runners in the Grand National with just five runners in the last ten years but Aintree has always been the target with West End Rocker.
It's well documented that King's horses were not firing at 100% in the 09/10 season and this horse ran twice that year performing poorly on both occasions. The upshot was an eight pound drop in the handicap for last season and with the trainer's string revitalised, the team utilised West End Rocker's new mark, winning two decent handicaps. The latter of these was the Classic at Warwick which turned into a war of attrition on heavy ground over 3m 5f. West End Rocker was well up to the task though and was driven out for just under a length's success from Minella Boys.
It would seem his unlucky experience last year in the Grand National (brought down at Bechers) has not caused any lasting problems as he returned to Aintree for the Becher Chase in December and was an emphatic twenty-two length winner. West End Rocker has gone up twelve pounds in the official handicap for that win which could be a little harsh considering this year's renewal of the Becher may not have been the strongest. Nevertheless, now he has confirmed his form at Aintree he looks the main horse to beat in this year's Grand National.
