Planet Of Sound Odds and Grand National Form
Planet Of Sound was campaigned at distances short of three miles in the early part of his chasing career finishing third in the Arkle in 2009 and winning Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter in 2010.
Connections then decided to step this son of Kayf Tara up in trip at the 2010 Punchestown Festival and they hit the bull’s-eye straight away with a near 120k victory in the Guinness Gold Cup. Previous Cheltenham Gold Cup winners War Of Attrition and Denman were amongst the vanquished that day and Planet Of Sound sprung to prominence as a horse who might go to the very top of the tree over three miles.
Philip Hobbs could only get two outings into the gelding in 2010/11 running fifth in the King George after a promising opening to the season when third to Imperial Commander in the Betfair Chase at Haydock. Hobbs reported that Planet Of Sound had choked after Kempton and then the gelding picked up an infection in a hind leg that brought his season to a premature close.
Planet Of Sound came back in 2011 in the Hennessy at Newbury and ran a stormer to finish just over three lengths second to Carruthers. Connections were understandably delighted with the horse's return to the track after nearly a year off and have stated that he will be aimed at the better long distance handicap chases.
Despite winning over three miles at Punchestown there must remain some doubt about his possible effectiveness at extreme distances and his previous breathing problems should always be kept in mind when considering any wagers.
