Pineau De Re Odds and Grand National Form 2015

As with many of his purchases before Pineau De Re, Richard Newland is a master at bringing out improvement from seemingly exposed horses but what he has achieved with Pineau De Re was an exceptional training performance. Pineau De Re had a bit of a reputation as a character in his time with Philip Fenton but Newland has transformed this seemingly exposed, relatively low-grade chaser into a horse good enough to finish third in a Pertemps Hurdle and then go on and win the most famous horserace in the world; The Grand National. Newland took plenty of time to unlock the key to Pineau De Re as the horse didn’t manage a win for his new stable until his ninth race in owner John Provan’s colours. Prior to that win the Grand National plan had been hatched when Pineau De Re ran in the Becher Chase and appeared to take to the Aintree fences well before an unlucky fall at the eighth fence. Leighton Aspell was recruited to do the steering in the National itself and the veteran jockey gave the horse a masterful ride, managing to stay aboard despite Pineau De Re making a number of mistakes. One heart-stopping moment for his supporters was when the horse hit the thirteenth fence very hard but despite that mistake the horse always appeared to be going well. Pineau De Re took up the running approaching the second last fence and Aspell pushed the horse out for a comfortable looking five length success. The emphatic style of Pineau De Re’s Grand National victory is sure to give his supporters hope of another win in the great race in 2015. The handicapper has raised Newland’s horse by eight pounds for his win but the trainer believes that the horse still has the scope to deal with that rise in the weights despite now being twelve-years-old. Daryl Jacob takes the ride this year as Leighton Aspell has been claimed to ride Many Clouds. Pineau De Re was a very convincing winner twelve months ago and if his jumping holds together there must be an excellent chance he can go very close in pursuit of a second Grand National victory.
