Hennessy Odds and Grand National Form
Considered to have a bright future when running in bumpers and novice hurdles but this horse's first two outings over fences were something of a disappointment and, as a result, his chasing career was put on hold. When he returned to the larger obstacles just over a year later he was immediately successful in a competitive beginners chase at Folkestone but was then thrown in at the deep end in a Cheltenham novice handicap and the National Hunt Chase at the Festival. These tasks proved beyond him but they provided Hennessy with an appealing handicap mark which connections chose to try and exploit in the Bet 365 Gold Cup at Sandown. Trainer Carl Llewellyn called on friend and former weighing room colleague AP McCoy to do the steering and the Champion Jockey gave the horse one of his special rides to get home by a neck. There didn't appear to be a lot left in reserve that day but his mark has only gone up 6lb for such a prestigious win so as he is only 8 rising 9 there may still be plenty of scope for improvement, especially as that was only his sixth race over fences. Llewellyn has now rejoined his former boss Nigel Twiston-Davies and there have been news reports that Llewellyn's former employer Malcolm Denmark (owner of Hennessy) has installed Warren Greatrex as trainer at Weathercock House for the coming season. At the moment Llewellyn is still listed as trainer of this horse on the Racing Post website.
