Alfa Beat racked up a five-timer in 2010/11 including the 85k Kerry National at Listowel. This prompted a trip to the Cheltenham Festival where the then Charles Byrnes trained gelding was backed into second favouritism for the four mile NH Chase.
Possibly did not stay the extended trip that day when weakening to finish fourth but had had a very hard season. This didn't stop connections trying him out over the National fences in the Topham where it looked like they were going a shade too quick for Alfa Beat to be comfortable. Nevertheless, he seemed to adapt well to the circumstances and was not totally out of contention when coming to grief at the fourth last. He had made a mistake at the previous fence and was then hampered by a riderless horse so it was perhaps understandable he fell at the next. Alfa Beat did suffer a horrible fall that day and it remains to be seen how the horse would react if asked to jump the Aintree fences again.
Subsequently sold for 75k after Aintree and moved to the stables of Shark Hanlon and his new connections have made a profit straight away as the horse took an apparently unexpected second victory in this season's Kerry National. Allowed to start at odds of 20/1 with punters obviously believing that the horse would not like the soft conditions, it did not stop Barry Geraghty driving this son of Environment Friend out for a near four length victory over Bideford Legend.
Alfa Beat's new trainer expressed a desire to train the horse with a view to the 2012 Grand National after his victory at Listowel and as such punters can probably ignore his two subsequent runs.
Winning the Grand National after taking the Kerry National has been done before by Montys Pass in 2003 and this horse appears to have been rather overlooked by punters and as such now represents excellent each-way value.
